This mountainous area is said to have been inhabited since the Jomon period
It is said that the Heike people of Kyoto, who were defeated in the Genpei War, retreated to live in the area. Therefore, it is said that the elegant atmosphere of Kyoto culture still remains. One of these is washi paper.
Gokayama washi, or Japanese paper, has been handed down from generation to generation. We were delighted to hear that there is also an exchange of calligraphy with people from as far away as China.
